On Saturday Night at 7:47pm NY/NJ fans were able to witness the newest homegrown graduate, Mohammed Sofo, break down the barrier from the academy to the first team. After Lewis Morgan picked up a knock in training this past week, Coach Sandro Schwarz turned to the youngster Sofo to help lead the attack. The RB2 product made an instant impact on Saturday Night's 2-0 win over Nashville by opening the scoring just 7 minutes in after pouncing on a rebound that bounced off the post from a shot by Designated Player, Choupo-Moting. Sofo's awareness and speed were key factors in his ability to get into the right position to slot home the first goal and give the Red Bulls an early lead.
After a promising pre-season Mohammed Sofo earned his spot on the first team roster. Taking advantage of some early-season injuries in the squad and by making the most of his opportunity given. New York Red Bulls fans can revel at the fact that the team has another young promising attacking talent coming through the ranks. Sofo joins players like Julian Hall, Omar Valencia, and Serge Ngoma as the latest Homegrown players to make a positive impression on the first team.
Emil Forsberg was able to add to the early celebrations that night with a 30th min goal. A right-footed curling shot from outside the box that found the top corner of the net gave the red bulls a 2-0 advantage in the first half. Although it felt good to score that goal Forsberg proclaimed, “yeah it feels good to score, but it was more important that we got the win as a team”. With Emil and Choupo shooting from outside of the box this gives the Red Bulls different avenues of scoring goals against teams that are hard to break down. Choupo-Moting was another player that made his impact felt as the DP played a full 90 minutes silencing any questions about fitness or health. Choupo was able to find more success holding the ball up and dishing it to teammates like Cam Harper or Emil Forsberg who then made the next pass to cut through the Nashville defense.
The second half saw few chances from both teams but no one was able to be clinical enough to add to the score sheet. However, Red Bulls preserved the clean sheet for Carlos Cornel and the defense, who all had a solid performance. The only bad news from Saturday’s night game was the injury to Cam Harper who was having an outstanding game on the right side until he pulled something in his leg after a collision in the first half with Nashville's forward Sam Surridge. Cam is now set for a spell on the sideline. With Harper injured, it could force the more defensively-minded Dylan Nealis to slot in on the right side of the defense, either in a back three or back five.
Next Up for the Red Bulls is Atlanta United this Saturday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
